OBJECTIVES

Marketing and Promotion in the Music Industry was conducted to gauge the current methods, preferences and opinions of members of the music industry, primarily musicians, on the ways that they market and promote their business (i.e. music). From this survey's results and analysis, we seek to help advance the discussion on the development of the music industry and the effect the Internet has had and continues to have on it. Conclusions made within this survey are meant to bring about possible solutions and proposals to problems brought up within survey results.

METHODOLOGY

The survey was online from March 19 to May 7, 1999 comprising of 50 consecutive days. A total of 128 complete unique survey responses were received during the time of the survey online. The sample population of this survey were subscribers to Tag It's music publications, primarily its industry magazine, MusicDish. However, participants also included subscribers from its three other publications, Mi2N, Black Hole and 'LA'Ritmo.com. Tag It subscribers were invited to participate in the survey a number of times through its newsletters during the period of the survey. In addition, respondents were invited to participate from selected music industry targeted newsgroups. An email was sent to a number of newsgroups, and users were invited to fill out the survey. All participants were required to fill out the survey on a web page posted online in MusicDish, with buttons and check boxes to respond to questions. To increase participation, a signed copy of "Hidden Keys To Making And Promoting Your Music Revealed" by Tonya Rae, was offered to one random participant of the survey.

If you have any further questions on the survey results, methods used, and/or final analysis & conclusions, please feel free to contact us by email at info@musicish.com with "Survey Comments" in the subject heading.
