Place of Purchase for Used Equipment - 8A
MusicDish Industry Survey

Although still in its early stages, e-commerce for music equipment is starting to gain although not nearly at the pace of CD sales perhaps. Of respondents purchasing used equipment, 11.6% did so online, while the majority still headed to the brick-and-mortar stores (61.6%) [8A].

The low number should be taken in context though. Due to the visual and interactive limits of the Internet at present as well as the anonymity of sellers, online shoppers run a greater risk of disappointment and fraud. Trust is the key here and a proposition supported by the number of respondents having made a purchase with an acquaintance (19.8%) versus through classifieds (7.0%)

E-commerce retailers though has a large market at its disposal with that of the 68.5% of respondents who said that they purchase music gear [8B], 65.9% of them spent at least $500 worth of equipment in the last year [8C]. The market for musical gear online is currently wide open and waiting for someone to take the lead. Maybe this will be Amazon's next direction.
