Bruce Cockburn - You've Never Seen Everything
Artist: Bruce Cockburn (www.brucecockburn.com)
Title: You've Never Seen Everything
Label: Rounder Records (www.rounder.com)
Genre: Rock/Folk, Jazz, Alternative, Pop
Bruce Cockburn has been through many changes in his long and storied career. You've Never Seen Everything is his new album and one of many great albums that he has recorded over the years. The man has embodied the word consistency in his line of business and he continues his brilliance on his latest effort.
This is a varied effort with a lot of soul and emotion in every song; it is also very angry and political. "Postcards from Cambodia" is certainly not a "having a great time wish you were here" type of message, it is a dark and brutally honest depiction of the killing fields of Cambodia and the how people were massacred without any thought.
The music that accompanies these songs creates the appropriate backdrop to balance Cockburn's cuts-like-a-knife lyrics. The variety of music is tremendous, ranging from folk, rock and jazz to alternative pop. As the gamut of human emotion is covered, so are the styles within the artists' command.
This guy has been around a long time and he sounds seasoned and sure footed when he delivers a tune. Anyone that enjoys Dave Alvin, Dave Matthews and Lou Reed or artists that resemble them, will really dig this record. I will be surprised if I do not list this album amongst my top ten for 2003.
