Q&A With Kenny Love Waiting to Exhale
Kenny:
We have a group of 4 people now for gigs. Do we book
a show alone, or try to get in a show with others? We rap
together, but I do R&B, so should we contact colleges
clubs, etc., and try to find out if they have any shows
coming up, and how to get involved?
Signed,

Dear WtE:
You did not state the amount of experience that your act
has, either individually, or collectively. Thus, assuming
that you are a "new" group, in the truest sense of the
term, my advice is for you to contact similar acts and
request to audition for possible inclusion in their shows
and tours.
You should probably go this route initially, because it is
unlikely that you will have great success, even on a local
level, if you do not have (pardon the pun) a track record.
This, basically, means that you are likely to have a very
poor showing in terms of audience if you attempt to
headline with no background, recording, airplay, press
coverage, etc.
You can check with your area night clubs for various
band contests they might be sponsoring in the interest
of getting exposure, or check with your colleges for
possible performances. In fact, if you can record a
performance on video, you might have quite a bit of luck
at the college level.
The best thing about colleges and particularly large
colleges, is that they can have hundreds of student
organizations that, at some point, require musical
entertainment. At colleges, you can contact both the
Student Affairs officer, as well as the various campus
organizations, fraternities and sororities directly.
