Les Sans Culottes - Faux Realism Aeronaut Records
Artist: Les Sans Culottes (www.lessansculottes.com)
Title: Faux Realism
Label: Aeronaut Records (www.aeronautrecords.com)
Genre: French Pop
Les Sans Culottes means 'those without undergarments' and refers to the unready
volunteers of the French Revolutionary army. That's strange enough without mentioning
that this French ye-ye pop band hails from New York City. It's to the mutual benefit of
LSC and fun culture that NYC tolerates such 60s-sounding eclecticism. This is a band
that works really hard to sound as different as their personalities must be. Grab a watusi
beat and leave behind the years of the B-52s and grab something young.
On their hip website, where you can sample a few tracks, you will find out that when the
opening song, 'Sa Sabine' says
'Je suis fou/ d'une jolie fille
une fille qui/ s'appelle Sabine
j'aime Sabine/ a la folie,
Sabine est si si sexy
s'habille de son bikini'
it really means
'i am crazy about a pretty girl
a girl who is call Sabine!
I love Sabine to madness
Sabine is so so sexy
When she wear her bikini'
While the music tries not to be influenced much by today's harsh aggressiveness, they
do believe in a pristine quality of recording. However, the hype says that this is a group
that has to be seen live. Even the New York Daily News says that. Still, this platter of
French surf rock will give you an ample appetite for the trek to the East.
Influences? Try Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall and Jacques Dutronc. When you've
finished looking those names up online, head over to their site and give a listen at just
what France was doing while the Beatles were so busy here.
