Randy Holden epitomizes the term 'Guitar God.' Nobody likes to be stereotyped or pigeonholed, particular the artistic type. I am sure that Mr. Holden would agree that he doesn't mind when people refer to him in this way. After all, it's a tag that he actually lives up to, it's not a façade. This guy is the real deal, make no mistake about it.
Every time I hear something by him I am more daunted with every facet of his musical presentations. We have this ongoing dialog because he told me long ago that he considers his music a gift, and he is so right. I am always bugging him about sending me more of this great music. I will e-mail him and say "Do you have any more gifts for me Randy?" And he always does. He knows I love his music and his attitude, and that's a great way to start before I give anything he sends me a spin.
"Guitar God" was Holden's first in a series of musical statements under that heading. I heard the releases backwards, and I found it to be an appealing way to listen to an artists' progression. No matter which way you listen to his music, chronologically or otherwise, you can hear serious development. And you will find it relatively easy to compare and contrast the different styles and approaches he uses on a continual upward scale, musically speaking that is. This is the first time that I have heard Holden sing on every track. He isn't the greatest vocalist, but it somehow fits the music just right. I love the way he creates the two part compositions (Dark Eyes & Dark Eyes Pt. II) and how he introduces the first part of the saga as the lead off track and the completion of the story as the closer. It's in a roundabout way conceptual, although I don't believe that it's the artists' intent to convey that. What Randy Holden says from start to finish in this music is that it's all about emotion, the spirit of independence, and the drive to make every song a masterpiece. I do believe he succeeds in reaching his goals. I thought I heard the ghost of Jimi Hendrix more than a few times on some of the riffs he cranks out on this great album. This is a must for all guitar players and fans of the six-string.
