As one of the few white guys who will admit to still loving The Artist (you know, Prince) after all these years of acting like a fool, The Drool Brothers come along and show me just how funky and silly and sane and skilled you're supposed to be, Prince: you idiot.
First up is 'Fullterton' which keeps repeating, 'I wanna live like a Sullivan / on the good side of Fullerton,' while the electric guitar drills holes and the vocals robotically stack up and the skipping drums lead the way into wonderfulland.
'Sexy motha fucka shakin' that ass / shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass' from Prince's Symbol album comes to mind in full glory when I hear 'Chicken Stix' and the way that title is repeated over and over with slight male chorus and fluid, wah-guitar, plus a good dose of goose-bumping sax sounds.
The point of The Drool Brothers seems to be the point of The Warner Brothers' cartoons. To give us shelter from fast-breaking storms, to forget the drive by shootings of life and concentrate on fun stuff for a minute. Well, 50 minutes. Chuck Mancillas and Tom Slik split up the duties between them, with a few guests on trumpet, sax, accordion, etc. to give the hits seasoned salt.
'Can't Lick It' is one of my favorites, if not The. The stereo goes all over the place, and the tune structure comes somewhere between a cut song from Shock Treatment and a 1972 Rascals piece of business. 'Because of you, I can't lick it.' The whirling guitars spin a hook like an electric spider behind in web making. The lead vocal from Chuck is on the point of tears or laughter and won't ever tell us which.
You might think 'Skeleton Girl' is an intelligent cover of an Adam Sandler semi-song, beefed up with hearty content; or a b-side off a Duran Duran hit; but all songs are written, produced & performed by Drool, making this one of the most original bands I've yet heard. They make listening fun. And I'll take that over the politics of folk and straight-edge rock Any day.
