Mlely is a very fine jazz pianist. He has that annoying ability, like Chico Marx, to make playing seem so insanely easy. No open mouth, no breathing hard or Bernstein-like tirades: G just seems to stare at his fingers, and his crawling, spirited fingers rush around the keys, finding the blacks and whites with hardly a worry. A delight to watch.
Which is good, because that's mainly what this series of 15 minutes segments seems to be. It's not How to play. Or even history really. It's more or less an appreciation of the form. A short break from life to catch a jazz cat at work. And to be honest, it's not jazz piano. It's jazz keyboard. But his keys have a very real tone to them. So -
The piano segments in the studio (which take up most of the time) are interspersed with a few facts or observances from Mlely as he takes his hat off and chats in the park or rowing around the river. He doesn't contribute much, informationally speaking, but he has a love for the subject, and he certainly communicates that effectively.
The selected segments I was sent were titled 'The Self-Sufficient Piano', 'Jazz Bossa Nova' and 'Disparate Elements'. The time on the keys was a joy to behold. The quality of the outside shots could've been better, but in the studio, the cuts and focusing on just the playing were simply, tastefully done, and that is the selling point after all. I hear it's going to be broadcast on a station or 2 in Hawaii. Should be fun.
