'I've come so far to see these hills / I have always dreamed they would be / just as green as those fields / back in old kentucky' begins our dirt road travels up 'Cryin' Love', the first of an hour's folk journey into understanding, respect and awe of the country we all take for granted here. A portion of the proceeds from this cd go to the Crazy Horse Memorial To All Native Americans. And what's more taken for granted around here than the stance of the historic Native American?
One of the simplest on the cd is title song 'Crazy Horse', with John on voice and classical guitar and Andrew Richter doing a cello. And immediately following that is the rich rhythm instrumental 'Machno', far too short, but very appreciated.
'shoes on your feet / guns in your hands / hide and seek / but who did care that you left this world / on your hands, came into another land?' That's 'Too Hip, Too High', a marriage between English music hall and folk. Picture Ukulele Ike pushed into this century, then trade him in for a guitar, and that's this sprightly piece of business that continues later with 'move away, pack it up / wish your friends all the luck / hide away, now you're fine / come on back, we're havin' fun'. Well, you can't be serious all the time, can ya?
John takes care of most of what you hear here, and does it very well. His voice is an intersection between Dylan and Elvis Costello, with EC being the dominant cross-street, 'cause John's voice has a smoothness to it that won't offend the peace and persistence of folk.
