Get Your MP3s With Newtella - The New Napster?
In late August, Saratoga based Newtella Inc. announced that it is planning to begin developing and promoting software that will utilize a peer-to-peer network for the sharing of MP3 files. Now, Napster is still very much alive, although how well it is remains to be seen. And during the period when an injunction against Napster seemed inevitable, many Napster fans quickly began familiarizing themselves with Gnutella. Newtella wants to be the alternative to the two, and its executives believe there's good reason for optimism. MusicDish spoke with Matthew Caughron, the Co-Founder of Newtella, who told us why Napster and Gnutella fans should make the switch.
He stated, "Newtella is a fully distributed network like Gnutella, so you can't take down a server and interrupt the service the way you can with Napster. The advantage we have over Gnutella is that when you search for a song with us, you'll get it back in an MP3 file rather than receiving pictures that may be associated with the song or other types of files. Gnutella allows unrestricted file exchange, whereas we're just music."
Newtella will also utilize an open source code, which will make the uncompiled programming language available to others, who can then revise or add to it to make a new and improved version of the Newtella software. "It's not absolutely necessary to utilize an open source code, but we feel that it's the right thing to do. It gives us access to a wide variety of people who will help us work on it." Caughron explained.
When asked if Newtella could really compete with Napster and Gnutella, he responded, "We do. Of course, it has a lot to do with what the Court's final decision is. If they decide against Napster, we'll be the only real alternative at that point. With Gnutella, there's a very high noise to signal ratio, and it's extremely difficult to use. We're focused solely on MP3s and music and making the end user experience very easy."
The incorporation papers for Newtella, Inc. were completed about 5 weeks ago, and the beta version of the software will be available in approximately two weeks.
