Gonzo's Moonwomb - Suggested Serving
Artist: Gonzo's Moonwomb (www.ozramp.net.au/~dan/)
Title: Suggested Serving
Genre: Rock
RealAudio: Strobing Kevlar Man
I received my 'Suggested Serving' in packaging that ironically very much reflects the CD itself. The CD was not enclosed in the usual jewel case, but a plastic sandwich bag with 'cover art' that was obviously hand drawn and photocopied onto purple colored paper. Much like its packaging, Gonzo's Moonwomb's music is very rough. The instruments often don't follow the same path and the vocalist seems to have a thing for holding the mic too close to his mouth-sounding like he's practically swallowing it. The recording for the CD is unpolished, and even sounds unfinished -very uncommon in a day of mass studio and production labor. This trio from Australia, certainly makes due with what they have, considering one person does trumpet, keyboard and vocals (the other two on drums and bass guitar/vocals). Gonzo's Moonwomb style could be compared to the abstract music of John Spencer's Blues Explosion-when John was 16 and playing in his garage. Moonwomb obviously has a direction they are trying to go in, but they are still finding their way there. The most difficult thing about trying to be abstract and breaking molds, is doing it artistically and showing that obvious, strong talent is present. There is talent present here, especially on the instrumentals (the vocals are too muffled, so I really can't comment on those) and the energy is excellent, however it needs to be focused-at least to a point where the lyrics can be understood.
